The Open Window
My aunt will be down presently, Mr. Nuttel,"" said a very self-possessed young lady of fifteen; ""in the meantime you must try and put up with me.""
Framton Nuttel endeavored to say the correct something that should duly flatter the niece of the momentous lady; but he was totally unable.
""I know exactly how you are feeling,"" she said, crashing into sympathetic laughter, ""you don't know anyone here who will talk to you. My uncle is always in London and we are so peaceful and boring. I tell you, we don't even have an orchard, not even a cow. ""
""I expect they will all appear later, when we get to know each other better,"" said Framton, seizing his opportunity.
""I hope you do not mind the open window,"" said Mrs. Sappleton gently, ""my husband and brothers will be back soon from shooting, and they always come in through the French window that is in this room. They are so far away, that I did not hear the car start. Besides, this is such a calm country that nothing ever happens to scare me. ""
Suddenly her face changed, horror showing through her eyes. A slight noise at the window made her turn her head, and a large white dog sprang inside the room. With a cry, she rose from her seat and ran out onto the terrace.
The niece followed her, giving poor Framton the only clue he could have had about her strange aunt.
""Out through that window, three years ago, to the day,"" explained the niece calmly, ""my uncle went off for hunting and has never returned to this house again. During that time my aunt has been expecting his return. He and my two younger brothers will be back any moment from now.""
She receded into welcoming silence, making it clear that the conversation was over. The unfortunate visitor in need of conversation wanted to leave, but was hoping for a polite excuse for his brashness.
""I must say goodbye now, Mrs. Sappleton,"" he said. ""Thank you for your charming hospitality. But I will probably never come back to this part of the country again.""
""Of course you won't be able to!"" said the lady of the house cheerfully. ""We will be kept busy for the rest of our days, waiting for my husband's return.""
